Blind Spot: Avoidance

Avoidance can feel mighty good in the moment. It gives us a little relief, a little quiet, and what looks like peace. But most of the time, it is only short-term comfort that carries a long-term cost.

We avoid things in all kinds of ways. We keep quiet about what is bothering us. We walk away before anything is resolved. We pretend we are fine when we are not. Sometimes we change the subject or stay so busy that we do not have to face what is really going on.

Here is what I have learned. Emotions do not evaporate. They accumulate.

Every frustration we leave unspoken becomes another brick. Before long, we have built a wall between ourselves and someone we care about, even though building that wall was never our intention.

Avoidance creates distance, assumptions, loneliness, and resentment. It can leave both people walking on eggshells until one small disagreement opens the door to a much bigger argument.

Healthy relationships don't require perfect words. They require honesty, kindness, and a willingness to begin. We might say, “I want to talk about this before it grows,” or “This is difficult for me, but it matters.”

Avoidance protects our anxiety for a little while. Honest conversation protects the relationship for the long haul. Speak gently, listen carefully, and do not let today’s silence become tomorrow’s wall.

Watch for the blind spots.
