Blind Spot: Broken in a Heartbeat
Trust can be broken in a heartbeat, and it takes time to rebuild.
For me, trust seldom arrives with a grand announcement. It grows when I do the little things I said I would do. I call when I promise to call. I listen when somebody needs to talk. I admit it when I get something wrong.
I have seen people hope that one big gesture will repair a relationship. The gesture may be sincere, but once trust is broken, it returns slowly and cautiously. The person who was hurt is watching what happens afterward. Will I show up when I say I will? Will I tell the truth when it is uncomfortable? Will I listen without preparing my defense?
Those ordinary moments may seem too small to count. They count. Each one tells another person whether it is safe to bring me their concerns, their hopes, and their mistakes. Trust grows when my words and my behavior agree, especially when nobody is keeping score.
If I have broken someone’s trust, I cannot demand that they believe me again. I can take responsibility, make amends, and give them time to see whether my actions match my promises.
What ordinary moment today gives me a chance to be someone another person can count on? That is where I can begin, one fulfilled promise and one conversation at a time.
Watch for the blind spots.
