Blind Spot: When Attention Leaves
I can tell somebody I love them and still leave them wondering whether they matter to me. Sometimes the difference is where I put my attention.
If I keep looking at my phone while someone is talking, my words may say, “I care,” but my behavior says, “Something else is more important.”
I have learned that attention is love in visible form.
It is putting down what I am doing, turning toward another person, and listening long enough to hear more than the first few words.
That sounds simple. It takes practice. My mind can get busy preparing advice, defending myself, or deciding how to fix something nobody asked me to fix. Before long, I am having a conversation with myself while the other person waits to be heard.
Sometimes the kindest thing I can ask is, “Help me understand?” Or “What else can you tell me about that?” Then I need to be quiet enough to let them answer.
I do not have to agree with everything I hear. I can give someone my attention while keeping my own judgment and boundaries. Listening means their experience matters enough for me to understand it.
Today, I want to notice who might be waiting for a little more of my attention.
Love becomes easier to believe when somebody can see it in the way I show up, day after day.
Watch for the blind spots.
