Blind Spot: Writing the Ending Too Soon

Delayed texts. Silent rooms. Unreturned phone calls. We have all experienced them, and if we are not careful, we can create an entire story before we ever learn the truth.

I have done it myself. A text goes unanswered longer than I expected, and I begin to wonder if I said something wrong. Someone leaves a meeting without speaking, and I imagine they are upset with me. Before long, I have connected dots that were never meant to be connected.

Most of us don’t realize how quickly anxiety fills in the blanks. It does not wait for facts. It writes its own script, usually based on old hurts, disappointments, or fears rather than what is actually happening today.

One of the greatest relationship skills I have learned is to slow down before concluding.

Instead of assuming, I have learned to ask a gently curious question. "Help me understand." "Is everything okay?" "Did I misunderstand something?" Those simple questions have prevented unnecessary conflict more times than I can count.

Healthy relationships are built on communication, not imagination. We do not strengthen trust by becoming mind readers. We strengthen trust by becoming better listeners.

Try this: the next time you find yourself staring at a delayed text or sitting in a silent room, resist the temptation to write the ending before the story has unfolded. False conclusions create real pain. Curiosity, patience, and honest conversation usually reveal a much better story.

Watch for the blind spots.
