Is Your Past Driving the Bus?

There have been times when I’ve allowed the past to hold too much power. Old wounds, regrets, and disappointments haunted my mind, shaping how I saw myself and what I believed was possible. I carried the weight of past failures and the sting of past criticism like baggage I didn’t know how to put down. Without meaning to, I let those moments define me. I replayed stories of missed chances and wrong turns, quietly convincing myself that my future had already been limited by what had gone wrong.

It’s easy to fall into that trap, to live as if I was still stuck in the moment when things went sideways. But what if the past is not a prison, just a teacher? What if its role was never to define me, but to refine me?

Something powerful happens when I shift my focus from the past to the present. I begin to see myself not through the lens of what I did or didn’t do, but through what I still can do. I recognize the gifts I carry that were always there but had gotten buried under doubt and distraction. I realize the only way the past can genuinely diminish my future is if I keep giving it the microphone.

Letting the past be the past doesn’t mean pretending it didn’t happen. It means choosing not to let it shape what happens next. It means honoring the lessons without surrendering the rest of my life to them. I have talents, insights, and passions that have grown through experience, some of which are painful, but that growth is valuable. That growth is mine to use.

Today, I see myself not as someone held back, but as someone ready to rise. My future isn’t written in the ink of my past. It’s written in the choices I make now. And when I lead with the best of who I am, I move toward a future that reflects not where I’ve been, but who I’ve become and will continue to be on this journey.

How about you? Is your past driving the bus to your future?

We need to constantly check in on the stories that we tell ourselves in our heads. There’s a lot of power in the present, lots of pitfalls in the past. What’s done is done.
